Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a surprise January move for former Wolves captain Ruben Neves, with head coach Ruben Amorim admitting the club "could make a signing" to bolster their midfield options.
According to a report from BBC Sport, the Portuguese midfielder has emerged as a genuine target for the Red Devils as they look for experienced reinforcements to salvage their season.
The 28-year-old, who left the Premier League for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a £47million deal back in 2023, is understood to be keen on a return to England. With his contract in the Middle East winding down, reports suggest he could be available for a "bargain" fee in the region of £20million this winter.
A "Market Opportunity" for Amorim
The links come just as Ruben Amorim publicly acknowledged the possibility of dipping into the market next month. Speaking to the press, the United boss admitted: "I don't know what is going to happen, but it's possible we can do something".
Neves represents exactly the kind of "opportunity" INEOS are looking for. While United have long-term interest in younger profiles like Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, those deals would likely cost in excess of £80m—a figure difficult to sanction mid-season. Neves, by contrast, offers proven Premier League quality, leadership, and tactical discipline at a fraction of the price.
Why Neves Wants Out
Despite enjoying success in Saudi Arabia, Neves has reportedly rejected offers to extend his contract beyond 2026. He believes he is still in his prime and wants to compete in a top European league to cement his place in the Portugal squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Al-Hilal are aware of his stance and may be forced to cash in now rather than lose a valuable asset for free in the summer. This precarious contract situation has put United, along with Newcastle United and potentially even Real Madrid, on high alert.
The Tactical Fit
For Amorim, Neves would be a "plug-and-play" solution. The United boss has been shuffling his midfield pack, often relying on an aging Casemiro while younger options like Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte struggle for consistency in the new system.
Neves’ ability to dictate play from deep, his exceptional passing range, and his threat from set-pieces would provide immediate balance to a United side that has often looked chaotic in transition. Furthermore, his relationship with international teammate Bruno Fernandes could be key in convincing him to choose Old Trafford over other suitors.
What Happens Next?
United’s recruitment team will likely view this as a low-risk, high-reward maneuver. If Al-Hilal officially signals their willingness to sell at the £20m price point, expect United to move quickly. Amorim needs control in the middle of the park, and Neves offers it in abundance.
